We<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"712.163986682892\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">had only been working with this management team for three weeks and this was<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"687.7859871387483\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">the first facilitated workshop. This was a team who had worked together for a<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"669.3851874828338\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">long time. They had much well developed market analysis, detailed strategy<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"709.3691867351534\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">documents and various plans they were implementing. They knew their business<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"687.1127871513368\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">well, many having worked in it for a long while. It was a FTSE 100 company,<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"689.397587108612\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">so we were not dealing with anything small. Ostensibly all we were doing was<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"712.5719866752621\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">playing back to them the strategy that they had written about and told us about.<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"456.1235914707184\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">Yet, in this workshop, we had hit a critical moment.<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"706.6967867851258\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The workshop had only been going for a short while and yet we were uncovering<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"674.770787382126\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">contrary views and beliefs amongst the team. Admittedly there was a clue to<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"698.3327869415283\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">potential difficulties in the first meeting with the chief executive, when he said,<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"695.864386987686\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">\u2018They don\u2019t get the strategy\u2019. The most critical issue was that some of the team<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"494.37359075546266\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">believed their objective for total shareholder return (TSR)<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_787_0\" data-canvas-width=\"6.826697301864625\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">1<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"186.12959651947023\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">was sacrosanct: they<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"664.8971875667575\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">had to achieve it. However, two of the team were questioning it and did not<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"701.7803868770601\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">believe that the total shareholder return target was achievable. As the topic was<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"705.4115868091585\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">discussed, the tension in the room seemed to rise. Eventually we asked, \u2018So, who<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"200.22599625587466\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">believes in this target?\u2019<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"686.1335871696471\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">The seven executives on the left, including the chief executive, put their hands<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"663.4283875942231\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">up. The two on the right did not. \u2018So, who does not believe in this financial<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"684.195587205887\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">target?\u2019 The remaining two members of the team raised their hands. One was<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"659.0627876758576\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">the relatively new human resources director, who had been promoted to his<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"558.6539895534517\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">position nine months before. The other was the finance director.<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"691.3763870716094\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">It felt as if a curtain had fallen across the room dividing those who believed in<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"674.2199873924257\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">the target from the two who did not. The tension rose further. The facilitator<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"665.8151875495913\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">turned to the chief executive and said, \u2018Tell us what you believe\u2019. He replied<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"664.8767875671386\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">simply and clearly, \u2018It is not in question. It is what we have to achieve. It is<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"679.1159873008728\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">what our bonuses are based on\u2019. The facilitator turned to the finance director<\/span><\/div>\n<div dir=\"ltr\" style=\"text-align: left;\" data-angle=\"0\" data-font-name=\"g_font_786_0\" data-canvas-width=\"651.8207878112795\"><span style=\"font-size: 20px;\">and asked him the same question.
