Abstract<\/p>\n

This paper examines in detail the meaning of two frequently used\u2014and misused\u2014terms,<\/p>\n

namely, \u201cbusiness model\u201d and \u201cstrategy\u201d. It is argued that as used by leading thinkers these<\/p>\n

two terms might reasonably be interpreted as having roughly equivalent meanings. However,<\/p>\n

we argue that there is another distinct and potentially useful role for the term \u201cbusiness<\/p>\n

model\u201d. In this role, strategies would be treated as grounded firmly in the real world,<\/p>\n

whereas business models would be treated as abstractions of firms\u2019 real-world strategies.<\/p>\n

Such abstractions, it is argued, have attracted the attention of so many researchers because<\/p>\n

they are useful for evaluating alternative possible future ways of building profitable<\/p>\n

businesses<\/p>\n
