is faced with huge challenges, with changes to regulations, resulting from the backlash of the economic crisis, to the ever increasing demand of customers to have the latest banking technologies at their fingertips, in the most remote regions.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"rtl\" align=\"right\">External challenges include governments and regulation, talent, financial markets, customer expectations and technology while internal challenges include products, channels, workforce, organizational models and infrastructure. These challenges are interconnected and there is, therefore, a need for banks and their leaders to be acutely aware of the changing marketplace and to understand the impact of decisions and their outcomes .<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Bank leaders need to think through these business challenges, not in silos but on a cross business scale. For example, innovative products may be developed as a result of customer expectation but could also be the result of technological development or in response to changes in the regulatory environment, which itself may change as a consequence of those new products or changes in customer expectation thereby creating a cycle of cause and effect.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"rtl\">2-<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Deloitte\u2019s experiences in providing services to clients and review and analysis of related research suggests that addressing these complex challenges is everyone\u2019s business regardless of the professional level, role or location \u2013 a truly collective endeavour. We highlight seven leadership principles that we believe can help the banking industry and its leaders in their efforts to succeed in ever changing environments: Firstly articulate a vision and secure enrollment. Over the last several years, studies (Booz &amp; Co 2008 and Harvard Business Review 2006) indicate that 40 per cent of management don\u2019t trust their senior leadership, don\u2019t believe leadership have a credible plan and don\u2019t have the confidence in leadership\u2019s ability to carry out a plan. A vision can only become alive if people are willing to voluntary commit to this vision, normally because there is a compelling opportunity to fulfill a personnel concern. Appealing to personal goals, conveying a sense of urgency and showing commitment are ways in which banking leaders can gain support for the company\u2019s vision.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Secondly build trust with clear communications. Successful banks that have weathered recent storms are those which have been open with their employees and effectively disseminated information to all levels, being clear on \u2018what is in it for them\u2019 and have also replaced the rumor mill with a culture based on trust and honesty. This is also critical in managing customers. Leading in a complex environment calls for authenticity, for example immediately after the subprime lending fiasco some large banks in the USA retained integrity by admitting to mistakes and communicating effectively with all stakeholders.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Thirdly, cultivate authentic leadership and value creation. A study by George Bill and others found that successful leaders do not possess any universal traits, skills or styles; instead they work hard to understand and develop themselves. They seek honest feedback, are mindful of their weaknesses and balance monetary and non monetary incentives. This fosters trust, relationships and the ability to drive results. We have found that organizations that have leaders with this mind set and who drive a results oriented culture are more inclined to find opportunities rather than problems.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Fourthly, address the swampiness inherent in business issues. Driving in Dar es Salaam is a complex process, giving way is classed as a charitable act, and traffic laws are interpreted differently by each driver. This \u2018swampiness\u2019 often results in a tangled mess of built up traffic. This is not dissimilar to how some financial services operate today. Banking leaders can combat this by developing their ability to adapt when a jam happens, re-planning and taking mid course corrections as appropriate that is strategic flexibility. Banks need to constantly be reviewing changing products, new technologies and their market positioning to make sure they avoid the traffic jam.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Fifthly, uncover and work with paradox and tension. Problems occur in every organization, acknowledging that they exist and asking difficult questions can help to reduce the impact of the problem. Uncovering assumptions, biases and contradictions are critical in effectively working through an issue. The use of people centric strategies aimed at building openness, innovation and loyalty has proven to be successful. One successful internet company resolves inherent tension but asking employees to dedicate 10 to 20 per cent of their time to innovation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Sixthly, tune into the shadow system. Effective use of informal networks to understand peoples true perceptions, understand how innovation occurs, help boost performance and reduce inefficiencies. Developing these informal networks can be anything from socializing with customers to creating think tanks to share ideas and common interests.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Lastly, recognize, prioritize and mobilize (RPM) for a potential crisis. Traditional scenario and contingency planning may not be enough to avoid a crisis. An enterprise wide view on risks is required to strengthen controls, standards and testing procedures. RPM methodology allows leaders to communicate risks to senior management. All too often employees fail to communicate potential risks through fear of \u2018rocking the boat\u2019, it is therefore imperative that risk management is engrained at all levels in the organization and an open culture is promoted.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Collectively, these seven leadership principles can help bank leaders to navigate through a myriad of complexities that they continue to face in the marketplace.
